Lucky Number Grill/2nd Story Loft
Editorial Review of Lucky Number Grill
There's just something unique about Lucky Number Grill. One part grill and restaurant, and another part dance club, it's become a go-to spot for young professionals, neighborhood locals, college students and party animals. This colorful group of visitors to this Bucktown watering hole is a stark contrast to an otherwise mostly gray interior.
Dark gray booths, tables and chairs sit on the main, first-floor dining area. A few large arches along the walls of red bricks add the only spark of color. The menu is simple and filled with what one would expect to find in a neighborhood grill. Appetizers ($3.95-$10.95) include plates of onion rings, chicken wings, mozzarella sticks or a sample platter of any three choices on the list. Those looking for a less-greasy alternative have four different types of salads ($4.95-$6.95) to choose from. And the main courses consist of a good list of sandwiches ($5.95-$8.95) and entrees ($7.95-$10.95) that include their Lucky Pizza with onion, red pepper, tomatoes, avocado, asparagus and topped with Chihuahua cheese.
On any given weekend nights, the second level offers a dance floor featuring a bar and local DJs playing yesterday’s and today's best dance music. Much like the first floor, the walls are black and the floor is of gray tile. But still, there's no gloom on the dance floor. A mirrored disco ball hangs above a group of patrons dancing and laughing. Unlike other bars that feature a dance floor, Lucky's is able to fill the room with moving bodies as the prices for liquid courage remain relatively low. All beers, including the imports, stay under $5. Well shots are only $3. And specialty drinks ($7), such as a martini, remain the most expensive items on the drinks menu.
Maybe that's why the owners have chosen to paint the interiors of this neighborhood hang out with such monotone colors. With cheap drinks, good food, dance music and fun regulars, Lucky Number Grill knows it has everything it needs.
